Kilkenny beat Antrim at Nowlan Park
Monday, 1 July 2002 12:30Sinead Millea was the difference between the sides scoring one goal and 16 points as Kilkenny advanced to the quarter-finals following their opening victory of 3-12 to 0-07 over Antrim in Nowlan Park. Catherine Doherty put the Cats ahead with a goal after six minutes and left last year's beaten All-Ireland finalists ahead 1-03 to 0-04 at the break.
But the second half scoring continued for Kilkenny with Sinead Millea and Jackie Frizby both netting goals. Elsewhere, National League champions Galway got off to a flying start to this year's campaign with a Sharon Glynn free within two minutes and the opening goal of the match some eleven minutes later.
Denise Gilligan was going towards goal when she was fouled and Glynn sent the free-kick into the back of the net. Another goal from Glynn and one from Gilligan left the Western side ahead 3-09 to 0-01 at the break. Wexford availed of the strong wind in the second half and scored a further four points before they registered their first goal from Michelle Hearne.
Cork will meet Derry in the All-Ireland junior championship semi-final on August 24th following their Munster Junior championship final victory of 1-12 to Tipperary's 2-04. Finally, Monaghan had much to celebrate at the weekend following their first ever Minor B Ulster Championship title when they beat Tyrone 5-03 to 2-01.
