Gaffney appointed new Munster coach

Australian Alan Gaffney has been appointed as the new coach of the Munster team to bring to an end the world-wide search for a successor to outgoing Munster chief Declan Kidney. The popular Australian was assistant to Matt Williams in Leinster having being appointed in August 2000 and previously worked with Williams at Super 12 level at New South Wales.

Gaffney is a life member of the famous Randwick Rugby Club where he played from 1965 until 1976. He was appointed as coach to Randwick in 1984 and was also the backs coach to the New South Wales Under 21 side who won the 1996 Australian Championship.

Ironically Munster play Leinster in the Guinness Interprovincial Championship in Musgrave Park on Friday night and Leinster will be without Girvan Dempsey, Denis Hickie, Shane Horgan and Victor Costelloe for that game.
