Ice Hockey: Eagles hold Giants

Ayr Scottish Eagles gave themselves a Challenge Cup boost by claiming a 3-3 tie with Superleague champions Belfast Giants at the Odyssey Arena last night. The two teams go head to head in the cup final on March 3, but Eagles proved Giants' formidable home record is not unbreakable with the Irish team hitting two late goals to steal a point.

Johan Silfwerplatz and Jason Bowen traded goals before Shawn Byram and Jonathan Weaver gave the visitors a two-goal cushion. Paxton Schulte cut the deficit with four minutes left and Jeff Hoad hit the game-tying goal with just 11 seconds left. It ended a run of seven successive wins for the Giants over the Eagles this season while also condemning the Irish side to a fifth game without a win.
