Winter Olympics: Gold and record for Witty

American Chris Witty completed a fairytale comeback from illness when she broke the world record on her way to the women's speedskating 1000m gold medal at the Winter Olympics yesterday.

Witty clocked a time of one minute 13.83 seconds to see off previous world record holder Sabine Voelker of Germany and fellow American Jennifer Rodriguez.

The victory and new record caps an astonishing comeback for Witty who has struggled with a debilitating viral infection in recent months.

"I saw 1:13 and that completely shocked me. Even if I was healthy my time would have been a surprise. It was a dream race and all I could have asked for," she said.
