Berwick earn lucrative Rangers replay
Tuesday, 15 January 2002 22:40Part-timers Berwick's goalless draw against Rangers at Ibrox has earned them a lucrative replay. Berwick famously knocked Rangers out of the cup back in 1967, but the border men had to defend desperately this evening to keep their more illustrious opponents at bay. Tore Andre Flo missed a free header in the 24th minute, while Shota Arveladze and Michael Mols also went close for Rangers in the second half, but the Gers' £23.5m-worth of talent on display could not break the deadlock.
Delighted Berwick manager Paul Smith said: "I thought the players were magnificent and thoroughly deserved the replay on Monday. From one to eleven, we worked really hard and frustrated Rangers for the whole game. I told the players before `you can go and make yourselves legends'. Rangers have moved on in the last 10 years - and back in 1967 the teams were more evenly matched."
Hibernian were more convincing against lowly Stranraer, winning 4-0 to hand Franck Sauzee his first victory as manager in comprehensive style. Francisco Luna, David Zitelli, Gary Smith and Eduardo Hurtado scored for Hibs to ensure a fourth round meeting with the winner of the Rangers - Berwick replay.
