Ice Hockey: Giants make record 10 home wins
Thursday, 6 December 2001 07:51Belfast Giants have made it a franchise record 10 home wins in a row after a 6-3 victory over defending Sekonda Superleague champions Sheffield Steelers at a sold-out Odyssey Arena. The Steelers had the better of the opening period but it was Belfast's man-of-the-match Kevin Riehl who opened the scoring in the third minute. Sean Berens made it 2-0 in the second period before Marc Laniel pulled one back for Steelers.
Soon after, Belfast restored their two-goal advantage through Todd Kelman and they went 4-1 up thanks to Paxton Schulte. Scott Allison and Riehl traded goals early in the third period. Brad Lauer fired home Sheffield's third before Jason Ruff's marker wrapped up a comfortable win for the home side.
