Roda through to UEFA Cup fourth round

Roda JC Kerkrade reached the UEFA Cup fourth round for the first time in its history by beating 10-man Bordeaux 2-0 in the second-leg tonight. The Dutch team, currently second from bottom in their domestic league, went down 1-0 in the first-leg in France but secured a 2-1 aggregate victory with goals from Yannis Anastasiou and Garba Lawal.

The first goal arrived in the 55th minute after Bordeaux midfielder Laurent Batlles was sent off for a deliberate handball in the box. Although keeper Ulrich Rame saved the resulting penalty from Anastasiou, the Roda man followed up to head home the rebound. Roda doubled their lead on the night after 65 minutes, when Lawal's bicycle kick was adjudged by the assistant referee to have crossed the line despite Rame's best efforts to keep it out.

In tonight's other UEFA Cup ties, Hapoel Tel Aviv progress after winning the second-leg tie at Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0, giving them an aggregate score of 3-1 while Borussia Dortmund go through at the expense of FC Copenhagen after the German side won the second-leg 1-0 to add to their 1-0 victory in the first-leg.
