Oldcorn to miss World Cup
Wednesday, 24 October 2001 12:12A back injury has forced Andrew Oldcorn to opt out of representing Scotland in the World Cup in Japan this November. Oldcorn will miss the chance of winning $500,000 and will be replaced by Dean Robertson. He will partner Andrew Coltart, who himself owes his involvement in the tournament to Colin Montgomerie's decision to turn down a place at the $3m event.
Oldcorn had been looking forward to making his Scottish debut - the Bolton-born golfer had played for England in his amateur days - but has only had one top 10 finish since capturing the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth in May and had to pull out of last week's Dunhill Links championship because of his injury. "For years I've been looking forward to making my debut for Scotland and to miss my first chance to play leaves me absolutely heartbroken," said the 41-year-old.
Oldcorn and Montgomerie are not the only players to opt out of this year's World Cup. Both Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke gave up their places in the English and Irish team's respectively. England will be represented by Ian Poulter and Warren Bennett while Ireland will be represented by the 1997 winners Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley, who have both been playing very well on the European Tour this year. The World Cup runs from November 15 to November 18.
