McAteer in possible Sunderland move

Irish midfielder Jason McAteer is expected to bring his Blackburn misery to an end with a move to Sunderland. McAteer has made only one full start for the Ewood Park outfit this season and is desperate for regular action after Irish boss Mick McCarthy insisted first team football is essential for players targeting next year's World Cup finals.

Talks are continuing between the player, his agent and Sunderland officials. A deal is expected to be concluded before the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have refused midfielder Rob Lee's transfer request. Chairman Freddy Shepherd told the club's official website that the request was "inappropriately timed". Lee made his transfer plea after a dispute over a contract extension.
