Celtic go top after Rosenborg win
Wednesday, 10 October 2001 22:35Celtic went top of Champions League Group E following their narrow 1-0 win over Rosenborg at Parkhead this evening. Alan Thompson 21st minute free-kick proved the difference between the sides and with Juventus drawing 0-0 in Oporto, Martin O'Neill's side lead the group by a point from the Italians.
Janne Saarinen was penalised and booked for bringing down Stilian Petrov on the edge of the box and former Bolton and Aston Villa man Thompson crashed home a tremendous left foot strike through the wall. Rosenborg needed victory to keep their hopes of making the latter stages alive and they made it an entertaining affair while also giving the Celtic fans many worrying moments.
But with O'Neill back in the dug-out following his one-match ban his side showed the resolve and the bottle to bag all points and move one point clear of Juventus after their draw. Celtic looked nervous in the early stages before Thompson struck the deciding goal, and despite going close through Larsson, Agathe and Petrov after the break, they had to be content with the single goal.
