Ice Hockey: Giants maintain good start
Thursday, 27 September 2001 13:04Belfast Giants maintained their recent good form with a comprehensive 5-2 victory over Superleague rivals Ayr Scottish Eagles to claim their third win in a row at the Centrum Arena on Wednesday. The Giants are now unbeaten in five games, and never looked in trouble after Colin Ward gave the lead inside 26 seconds.
Sean Berens added a second, Jonathan Weaver replied for Ayr - clearly missing the league's top-scorer Ed Courtenay - but Rod Stevens and Kevin Riehl put some daylight between the two sides. Ayr again cut the deficit through Rhett Gordon before Berens' second of the night condemned Paul Heavey's side to their third defeat in four games.
Meanwhile, champions Sheffield Steelers continued their solid start to the season with a 5-3 win over London Knights at the Sheffield Arena. Steelers, who began their belated season with a win and a draw last weekend, went 2-0 up through Brad Lauer and Chris Lipsett. Trevor Roenick and Mark Kolesar levelled before Kevin Miehm restored Sheffield's lead with the only goal of the second period. Scott Allison and Jason Mansoff put the result beyond doubt with Roenick's second on the powerplay a mere consolation for London.
