Strachan ends Sky Blues reign

Gordon Strachan's five-year reign as Coventry City manager has ended following his departure from the club by 'mutual consent'. The Sky Blues have endured a torrid time following their relegation from the Premiership last season, and with just one win from five First Division starts, chairman Bryan Richardson announced his surprise departure this morning.

Richardson confirmed: "I wish to place on record our sincere thanks and appreciation for Gordon's efforts on our behalf both as a player and as manager. For two years he almost single-handedly kept Coventry in the Premiership. As a manager he gave 100% effort every day for this club. We all wish Gordon huge success in the future and thank him for his refreshing honesty, humour and sheer guts. We'd also like to place on record our thanks to coaches Garry Pendrey and Jim Blyth who are also leaving the club at this time. We wish them both a successful future in the game."

The 44-year-old Scot had been at Highfield Road for five years, but oversaw the club's relegation from the top flight for the first time in 34 years last season, having narrowly avoided the drop the previous two. Following Strachan's departure, Roland Nilsson has been appointed caretaker boss and will be in charge for tomorrow night's Worthington Cup second round clash with Peterborough.
