Thorpe out of short-course championships
Friday, 7 September 2001 16:57Ian Thorpe has announced he will not compete at next year's short-course world championships in Moscow. Australian officials confirmed today the teenage sensation, who won a record six gold medals at this year's long-course world championships in Japan, wants to save himself for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the Pan Pacific championships in Yokohama.
According to Thorpe's coach Doug Frost, the 18-year-old from Sydney is taking a holiday and will return to competition at the Australian championships in Brisbane next March but would skip the short-course titles to be held in Moscow in April.
