Carroll signs for United
Friday, 27 July 2001 12:16Northern Ireland goalkeeper Roy Carroll has finally become a Manchester United player following his signing from Wigan Athletic this morning. Carroll will become understudy to Fabien Barthez at Old Trafford after agreeing a four-year contract, but will also face competition from veteran Raimond van der Gouw and rookie Paul Rachubka for a shot at first team football.
The nine times capped 'keeper signed for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £2.5million. Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson confirmed: "We are delighted to sign Roy as he is one of the most promising goalkeepers in Britain. He will play a number of games for us and will have the opportunity to learn under the best in the world, Fabien Barthez.
Speaking of his impending move yesterday, Carroll echoed the sentiments of his new boss: "It will be great working with Fabien Barthez because at the moment there's no better goalkeeper in the world. Obviously he is the number one, but I'm hoping to do well if I get a chance. The whole deal has not sunk in yet. I will be working with Fabien Barthez and facing shots from David Beckham in training. It's incredible! I'm over the moon and I just hope everything will be sorted out."
Elsewhere, former Northern Irish international Jimmy Quinn has been appointed boss of Conference side Northwich Victoria. Quinn has previous managerial experience with Reading and Swindon Town.
