Eriksson wants Taylor to quit Leicester
Thursday, 14 June 2001 12:19England boss Sven Goran Eriksson wants Peter Taylor to quit club football and return to managing the national Under-21 side, it has been reported. The Leicester manager would be groomed as Eriksson's eventual successor, replacing Howard Wilkinson who controversially took Taylor's Under-21 job two years ago. Wilkinson has been under serious pressure following a 3-1 defeat in Greece last week. The FA will formally approach Leicester chairman John Elsom when he returns from holiday next week. The Foxes' chief operating officer Steve Kind is optimistic that Taylor will stay at the club. He said: We have had no formal approach from the Football Association and Peter Taylor remains committed to Leicester City and we look forward to him leading us into the forthcoming Premiership season."
Taylor became involved with the senior team following Kevin Keegan's resignation and took charge alongside new Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren for a friendly against Italy in Turin last November. He has continued to combine his duties at Leicester with assisting England manager Eriksson since the Swede's arrival. Middlesbrough have already given former Manchester United number two Steve McClaren the go-ahead to resume his role with the England squad. Sir Alex Ferguson blocked his involvement for the World Cup warm-up win over Mexico and the qualifier in Greece earlier this month.
