Daly may be forced to retire

Martin Daly, one of Clare's outstanding footballers of the last decade, may be forced to retire form at the age of 27.

Daly has been advised by doctors to quit due to a back injury, but will delay making a final decision until the results of a recent scan have been revealed. "It's heart breaking," said Daly, "I don't want to quit but it's not looking good. I desperately want to continue playing but I have been told it could cause me problems in later life." Daly has been suffering with the problem for a number of years now, and the condition has been getting progressively worse during that time. Discs at the top of his spine are grating giving pain and stiffness and severely restricting movement.

"There are times when my back is as stiff as a board," adds Daly, "There is very little flexibility there and the worry is that if I do continue playing I would do more damage which would effect me in later life. I'm having another scan and, depending on the results, it will be time to make a decision then."
