EuroBOSS series returns to Mondello
Friday, 18 May 2001 13:09The EuroBOSS series for ex-Formula One cars makes a welcome return to Mondello Park this weekend for the Irish Superprix. This year's event will attract more interest than usual as it will mark the first time a Ferrari will be raced at the famous circuit since it opened back in 1968. The car in question is the ex-Gerhard Berger Ferrari V12 from 1995 and it will be raced this weekend by Dutch driver Klass Zwart.
The Irish Superprix will take place over two 15-lap races on Sunday afternoon with previous Superprix winner Tony Worswick a strong favourite in a Jordan. Other definite contenders will be Tony Shelton in the ex-Schumacher Benetton and Earl Goddard in the F3000 chassis which is fitted with F1 brakes and a 4.0ltr V10 engine.
Irish interest in the race will centre on Sarah Kavanagh in her Team E-Merge First Active ex-Rubens Barrichello Jordan while another Irish driver, Noel McIntyre, will participate in the BOSS 3000 class. Kavanagh is hoping that the mechanical problems that put her out of the running of a top placed position two weeks ago at Brands Hatch, will not halt her progress at Mondello, where she last raced three years ago.
"Last time I raced here we only had a Formula 3000 car but with the support of the huge crowd I managed to win my class and get third overall. This time I have the amazing Jordan 193 Formula One car and we really are aiming to win outright", she said. However, Kavanagh is all too aware of the stiff competition she will face on Sunday. "At Brands Hatch the Ferrari was astonishing", says Sarah. "When I retired I had to stand and watch from the edge of the circuit and I couldn't believe the power of the car, and in Klaas's hands it will certainly fly this weekend", she added.
All in all, 13 Formula One cars and seven Formula 3000 cars are expected to race. The first race will get underway at 2pm with the grid places decided by qualifying at the circuit in the morning. The second race will take place mid-afternoon, following other events such as the Formula Vee qualifer and the Stryker sports cars race. The grid places for that second race will be determined by the finishing order in race one.
