United opt for Goram, Kelly bid denied
Wednesday, 21 March 2001 17:54Andy Goram is travelling down from Scotland tonight to complete a shock move to Manchester United. United have agreed to pay Motherwell £100,000 to borrow the 36-year-old former Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper. Goram's Motherwell contract expires in the summer but the United deal is for three months only.
United have problems ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich with both Fabien Barthez and Raimond van der Gouw injured and have been given permission by UEFA to sign a keeper on loan.
Earlier today Blackburn insisted they had not received an approach from United to take goalkeeper Alan Kelly on loan. "We have had no approach whatsoever from United and it is far from certain we would let anyone go, even if there was one," said Rovers chief executive John Williams.
Rovers boss Graeme Souness has previously stated he is prepared to let either Kelly or John Filan go, but with both Filan and Alan Miller injured, Kelly is currently the only cover for first-choice Brad Friedel. (PA)
