Aldridge return would be welcomed - Rodgers

Tranmere Rovers chairwoman Lorraine Rodgers says she would love to see John Aldridge back at Prenton Park. The former Republic of Ireland striker resigned on Saturday after five years as manager following the defeat by Barnsley.

The former Liverpool striker felt it was in the club's best interests that he should vacate the job. Rodgers confirmed: "His achievements as a player were outstanding and his achievements as a manager were special. He is part of the brand of Tranmere Rovers and is part of the club. I really hope we see him around a lot in whatever capacity is right for the club and is right for John Aldridge."

Tranmere, rooted to the foot of the First Division, travel to Gillingham tomorrow. Assistant manager Kevin Sheedy and reserve team manager Ray Mathias will take charge of the team. Rodgers is anxious that the club don't suffer from the sudden departure of Aldridge. "The players don't want to let themselves and the supporters down," she told Tranmererovers.co.uk. Rodgers added: "There is an awful lot of work to be done. We could talk a lot about John and all he has achieved but frankly we don't have time. We've got 11 games left and we all have to pull in the same direction." (PA)
