Boyd wants to remain at Celtic

Celtic captain Tommy Boyd is hoping to extend his stay at the Glasgow football club beyond his testimonial year. The 36-year-old defender signed for Celtic from Chelsea back in 1992 but has no desire to leave the club or hang up his boots just yet. It had been expected this season would by Boyd's last at the club but he has other ideas.

"I'd actually be delighted to sign a new deal because I love it here and I don't want to go anywhere else. With the way things are going this season I'd like to stay here and I would want to stay as long as I can. There's no better place to be. More discussions haven't yet taken place. But they will take place sooner rather than later," he said.

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill revealed that he would also be interested in working out a new deal with his skipper. "I want Tom to stay, and anyway he makes a good cup of tea and the lads like him about for that reason," joked the Northern Ireland man.

"He's been excellent, splendid for us this year when I think back to when I met him for the first time back in June. I met him in the treatment room and he started telling me what a hard time he'd had with injuries and had two back operations. He also showed me his birth certificate which wasn't one of the best things to do when you're starting off with a new manager. He's even played more games than I thought he would have done so he's honestly been splendid for us," added O'Neill.

Boyd has also been promised a testimonial match by Celtic for his services over the years but a date and possible opponents have yet to be arranged for the fixture.
