Snooker: Doherty cues easy victory

Ken Doherty cruised to an easy victory over Maltese professional Alex Borgat last night at the Malta Grand Prix. Defending champion Doherty defeated Borg 5-1 with two centuries and three other half centuries.

Doherty began the match with a break of 115 and raced into a 3-1 lead with a 131 in the fourth. He completed the match with breaks of 77 and 79. The top player from each of the four three-man groups progress to the semi-finals, with Doherty scheduled to meet John Higgins on Friday. If Higgins wins that tie, he will progress to the semi-finals.

In tonight's matches world number five Stephen Lee tackles Northern Ireland's Joe Swail in Group C while world number one Williams faces hot-shot Hunter. Last night Swail lost 5-3 to Irishman Fergal O'Brien only now getting over the disappointment of losing to Hunter at Wembley.

Today's order of play - 3pm Group A - J Higgins (Sco) v A Borg (Mal), Group B - S Hendry (Sco) v J Grech (Mal). 7pm: Group C - S Lee (Eng) v J Swail (NI), Group D: M Williams (Wal) v P Hunter (Eng).
