Snooker: O'Brien wins battle of the Dubliners

Fergal O'Brien won the Irish head to head at Wembley tonight when he beat fellow Dubliner Ken Doherty 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the Benson & Hedges Masters.

O'Brien notched up the first three frames and then after a 45-minute struggle made it 4-0 at the interval. Doherty won the next frame to stop the rot but then fell 5-1 behind before taking the seventh. O'Brien then sealed his win in the next on the black and now faces Dave Harold for a place in the final.

Earlier Stephen Hendry fought back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Jimmy White 6-4 in their quarter-final this afternoon. White opened up a 3-1 interval lead and should have moved further ahead after the break, but a missed red let the Scot back in to snatch the frame. Hendry later followed up with a century break in the seventh to move 4-3 ahead. White pulled one back to make it 5-4 but the six-time champion won the tenth to take victory and progress to the semi-finals.
