Boxing: Maloney to promote safety plans
Thursday, 21 December 2000 19:30Frank Maloney, the manager of seriously-ill boxer Paul Ingle, has said that from now on every fighter under the Sports Network banner will employ dieticians and psychologists in the build up to a fight. He is hopeful that other boxing stables will follow his example with assistance from the British Boxing Board of Control. "I've had long meetings with Frank Warren since what happened with Paul and we've noticed these things have occurred at lower championship weights. At Sports Network we're going to set up our own working party to look into such aspects as dehydration and we will make available to boxers and trainers qualified dieticians, sports physios and sports psychologists," said Maloney.
"We will also talk to the Board about allowing some sort of drink in the corners to replace the necessary substances that are lost like vitamins and glucose. We also want boxers to take dehydration tests and if boxers show they are dehydrated then the management will be forced to pull them out of the fight. We believe this is not a time to knock boxing. It is a time for people within the sport to get together and try and figure out ways of improving the safety aspects," he added.
