Soccer: UEFA Cup summary
Friday, 24 November 2000 09:20The Bayer Leverkusen rollercoaster continues to rattle on with a remarkable 4-4 draw at the Bayarena against AEK Athens in last night's UEFA Cup third round first leg clash. The two sides slugged it out in former Germany boss Berti Vogts' second game in charge, with defender Vassilos Lakis striking the first blow for the visitors with a fifth-minute opener. Veteran striker Ulf Kirsten scored twice before half-time to put the home side in front.
Fernando Navas equalised within a minute of the restart but the Bundesliga club were back in front a minute later thanks to Robert Kovac. Greek international Vasilias Tsartas struck a penalty in the 54th minute to level the scores at 3-3. Navas got his second of the night and it was left to Carsten Ramelow to save the day in the last minute.
Bayer's compatriots 1860 Munich also left it late to secure a draw away at Parma. The home side were two up inside the first 10 minutes after goals from Stephen Appiah and Johan Micoud.
A strike by Roman Tyce in the 79th minute dragged 1860 back into the game before Markus Beierle earned the Bavarians a valuable draw with a last-gasp equaliser.
There were seven more goals at La Beaujoire as Nantes defeated Lausanne 4-3. Defender Nicolas Gillet got the winner with seven minutes left after the Jeune et Verts came back from 3-2 down.
Bordeaux made it a good night for France with a 4-1 win over Werder Bremen, with Marc Wilmots poaching a brace. An under-strength Roma side won 1-0 at home to Hamburg, Gianni Giogou netting the winner in the first half.
PSV Eindhoven powered to a 3-0 win over PAOK Salonika, with all three goals coming before half-time at the Philips stadium. Arnold Bruggink opening the scoring before Yugoslavia striker Mateja Kezman added two more.
Barcelona recorded a 2-0 win over Jupiler League leaders Bruges - the Belgian side's first home defeat of the season. Rayo Vallecano held Lokomotiv Moscow to a 0-0 away draw in freezing conditions while fellow Primera Liga side Celta Vigo also managed an eastern block, drawing 0-0 with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.
Espanyol were the only Spanish side to lose, 2-0 at home to Porto, but Alaves will be unhappy after Frode Johnsen's last minute goal secured a 1-1 draw for Norwegian champions Rosenberg.
Croatians NK Osijek recorded a fine 2-0 win over Slavia Prague. Former European Cup-winners Feyenoord and Liverpool fought out 2-2 draws against Stuttgart and Olympiakos respectively. (PA)
