Soccer: The French continue their domination
Wednesday, 15 November 2000 22:42World and European champions France cantered to a 4-0 victory over an experimental Turkey side in a soccer friendly tonight. The result of the match was all but settled in the first half as the French swept into a three-goal lead. Juventus striker David Trezeguet opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Arsenal's Sylvain Wiltord made it 2-0 seven minutes later before Johan Micoud extended the lead a minute before the interval. Substitute Laurent Robert wrapped up an emphatic win when he scored in the 74th minute.
Impressive Denmark scored a well-deserved 2-1 win over Germany in an international soccer friendly on Wednesday with Dennis Rommedahl of PSV Eindhoven scoring both goals in a 10-minute second half spell. Rommedahl, a nippy right-sided midfielder making only his fifth appearance for Denmark, struck in the 56th and 66th minutes to end Germany's mini-revival under new coach Rudi Voeller which had seen them unbeaten since July.
Elsewhere, Uruguay were rewarded for their painstaking preparations when they drew 0-0 away to Bolivia at high altitude this evening and claimed a priceless World Cup qualifying point. Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini performed heroics to keep alive his country's chances of a first World Cup appearance since 1990 and put paid to any lingering hopes Bolivia may have had. Uruguay have 15 points from 10 games and Bolivia nine.
Meanwhile in Glasgow, Australia scored a 2-nil victory over Scotland in a friendly international tonight. Brett Emerton scored the first of the night in the 12th minute and David Zdrillic completed the Aussie's brush with the Scots when his shot hit the bulls eye in the 66th minute.
