Ken Doherty secured his place in the last eight of the Grand Prix at Telford, with a 5-3 victory over fellow Dubliner and regular practice partner, Fergal O'Brien. Doherty, fresh from his five frame demolition of Dungannon's Patrick Wallace in the previous round, never settled into his game and only just emerged following a scrappy eight frame contest.
Doherty could only manage one half-century break en route to an unconvincing victory, and knows a dramatic improvement will be needed if he is to mount a serious challenge for the title. He is sure to receive a sterner test of his abilities in the next round, where he is expected to meet Ronnie O'Sullivan, who faces fellow Englishman Rob Milkins later today.
