Athletics: Irish in action at World Junior Championships

On the first morning of the World Junior Athletics Championships in Santiago de Chile, Ireland's Emily Maher comfortably won heat one of the women's 100 metres in a time of 11.71 seconds. There was an Irish junior record from Derval O'Rourke in the women's 100 metres hurdles when she finished third in her heat in a time of 13.61 seconds.

The solitary Irish field eventer, Eileen O'Keefe in the women's hammer, finished 26th overall in qualifying with a throw of 50.13 metres. There was a huge shock in the event with the Sydney Olympic champion, Poland's Kamilla Skolimoska, finishing 20th and failing to qualify for the final.
