Athletics: Irish in action at World Junior Championships
Tuesday, 17 October 2000 19:05On the first morning of the World Junior Athletics Championships in Santiago de Chile, Ireland's Emily Maher comfortably won heat one of the women's 100 metres in a time of 11.71 seconds. There was an Irish junior record from Derval O'Rourke in the women's 100 metres hurdles when she finished third in her heat in a time of 13.61 seconds.
The solitary Irish field eventer, Eileen O'Keefe in the women's hammer, finished 26th overall in qualifying with a throw of 50.13 metres. There was a huge shock in the event with the Sydney Olympic champion, Poland's Kamilla Skolimoska, finishing 20th and failing to qualify for the final.
