GAA: Tom Dempsey retires from county hurling
Tuesday, 19 September 2000 16:18Tom Dempsey has followed Martin Storey's decision to quit the Wexford hurling team. Although it is a serious blow to the Slaneysiders their retirement will have come as no surprise to county officials as the two men were close to retirement at the end of last year's championship.
Dempsey and Storey are hurling legends in Wexford and will always be remembered for their performances in 1996 when they were influential in bringing All Ireland success to the county. Dempsey made his Wexford debut in 1984 and like Storey went through numerous heartbreaks with the county before claiming the Leinster crown in 1996, ending a barren spell of 19 years. Dempsey also had success with his club team Buffers Alley, they were All Ireland club champions in 1989.
Storey's debut for the county came in 1985 and as well as his All-Star awards he was chosen as Players Hurler of the Year in 1996. Meanwhile, the special committee charged with selecting a replacement for Joachim Kelly is said to have made their choice. Although no announcement is expected until after the county board meeting next month.
