Tennis: Davenport reaches US Open final
Friday, 8 September 2000 22:54Lindsay Davenport fought off a late comeback by unseeded Russian teenager Elena Dementieva tonight to reach the US Open final at Flushing Meadows.
Davenport, champion in 1998, won the first set with relative ease but had a tough fight to claim the second holding off a strong late challenge from Dementieva to eventually take it 7-5 on a tie break. The final score read 6-2 7-6 (7-5). "I started slowly and I was making too many mistakes, admitted Dementieva. "I found my game and played more relaxed but it was too late. I need to improve my serve, my grandmother can serve better."
Davenport, who is the number two seed, will meet Wimbledon Champion Venus Williams who defeated Martina Hingis 4-6 6-3 7-5 in the other semi-final.
