Boxing: The future is bright for Barrett

watch listen

Francis Barrett is the latest Irish boxer to cause a stir on the international scene, and his fighting pedigree will finally be tested when he makes professional debut at Wembley on August 12th.

He has been lined up fight on the Joe Calzaghe/ Omar Sheika bill, who contest the WBO world super middleweight title in the night's centrepiece. Barrett, who represented Ireland with distinction in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, is one of Ireland's true boxing hopes.

His impressive amateur record of 280 wins and only 25 defeats underlines his undoubted potential, the highlight of which was the National ABA welterweight title he won in 1997. He has signed up with top promoter Frank Warren at Sports Network, who added, 'I have no doubts he will win a world title.'
