Wimbledon: Pierce bows out but Davenport survives

Mary Pierce bowed out of Wimbledon in straight sets yesterday to Spain's Magui Serena. Pierce seemed unable to deal with her opponents left handed service game and lost both sets on tie breaks. It looked as if number two seed Lindsay Davenport would follow Pierce out of the tournament when she trailed by three games to none and one set down. She produced a remarkable comeback however to win the next six games to take the set and then win the last set by six games to three.

Davenport who is far from comfortable on grass said, "I am just trying to enjoy grasscourt tennis without getting hurt, it can be miserable sometimes when you are not really used to it. Then I remember what I was once told, no player really likes to play on grass and difficult for everyone at the beginning. I've tried to keep that in mind."
