Wimbledon: Pierce crashes out in second round

watch

Third seed and current French Open champion Mary Pierce has become the highest women's seed to fall at the championships when Magui Cerna of Spain won in straight sets 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4). Pierce lost her best chance of progressing when she failed to take advantage of breaking her opponents serve in the second set.

Another seed that fell was South African Amanda Coetzer. The number 12 seed was knocked out in straight sets by American Lilia Osterloh 7-6 (7-0) 6-2. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Jelena Dokic, the girl who defeated Martina Hingis in the first round last year, is in the third round for the second year running after defeating Gala Leon Garcia 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Defending women's champion Lindsay Davenport was given a scare by unseeded Elena Likhovtseva after losing the first set but she recovered to take the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Comeback queen Jennifer Capriati swept aside fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6 6-2 to move into the third round. Capriati was pushed hard by Shaughnessy, ranked 55th in the world, but after winning the first set tie break Capriati's confidence grew and she won the second set with ease. Two-time runner-up Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario booked her place in the third round with a convincing 6-3 6-1 victory over Italian Rita Grande. Sixth seeded American Monica Seles, the 1992 runner-up, also moved into the third round after overcoming Belgian Els Callens 6-4 6-4.
