Third seed and current French Open champion Mary Pierce has become the highest women's seed to fall at the championships when Magui Cerna of Spain won in straight sets 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4). Pierce lost her best chance of progressing when she failed to take advantage of breaking her opponents serve in the second set.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Jelena Dokic, the girl who defeated Martina Hingis in the first round last year, is in the third round for the second year running after defeating Gala Leon Garcia 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Comeback queen Jennifer Capriati swept aside fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6 6-2 to move into the third round.
