Tennis: Henman bites the dust in French Open
Friday, 2 June 2000 20:29Tim Henman's flirtation with the red clay of Roland Garros came to a sticky end this afternoon when he lost his third round match with Spaniard Fernando Vicente in five dramatic sets. The British number one was beaten 7-5 4-6 6-4 4-6 6-3 in three hours and 38 minutes of compelling action under a burning Paris sun.
Elsewhere at the French Open, local seeded hopes Nathalie Tauziat and Sandrine Testud were sent packing in the third round. America's Chanda Rubin ousted Tauziat in straight sets, while Swede Asa Carlsson came from a set down to beat Testud 2-1. Also through to the fourth round were Martina Hingis, Mary Pierce, Amelie Mauresmo, Monica Seles and Natasha Zvereva.
In the men's draw, Spanish 10th seed Alex Corretja beat former Wimbledon champion, Richard Krajicek, in four sets to reach the fourth round. Mark Phillipoussis, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Yevgeney Kafelnikov also advanced. Brazilian fifth seed Gustovo Keurten beat the last American hope in the competition, Michael Chang, in four sets.
Meanwhile in Ireland, Scott Barron went out of the Dunlop Irish Futures Series event in Rathmines today, losing to Swiss player Yves Allegro by 2 sets to 1.
