Soccer: Hasselbaink heading for Stamford Bridge
Wednesday, 24 May 2000 21:27Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is looking forward to the prospect of a return to the Premiership, with Chelsea believed to be leading the queue to land the Dutch striker. Chelsea see him as an ideal replacement for the unsettled Chris Sutton. Hasselbaink will quit Atletico Madrid after their relegation from Spain's Primera Liga and has his eyes on a return to Britain. "I've had many offers but it now looks as though my future is sorted out," Hasselbaink said.
"I want to be involved at the highest level this season. With Atletico going down to the Second Division, I know that back in Britain I can carry on at the top," he said. Chelsea are reported to be ready to pay over £14million for Hasselbaink, who walked out on Leeds just nine months ago to move to Spain. But any deal will not be finalised until after Saturday's Spanish Cup final, which will be the Dutchman's final game in Spain.
Hasselbaink added "I want to leave Atletico with a major trophy under my arm, to show that it's been a personally successful season for me, even though the club have been relegated. I've scored enough goals in a struggling side to still finish top scorer and I know I can continue to score goals," Hasselbaink told reporters.
