Olympics: McColgan will miss Sydney

One of Catherina Mc Kiernan's main rivals, Scotland's Liz McColgan will not be taking part in this year's Olympics. The 35-year-old had hoped for one last attempt at winning the marathon in Sydney before retiring. But because of a foot operation six weeks ago she is not be prepared enough to run the qualifying time of two hours 33 minutes.

McColgan said, "Although I am back running I will not risk a marathon too soon. If I break down again, or even trip on a cobblestone, that's me retired. Running 2:33 would not be a problem, but I won't compete in another World or European Championship."
