Tennis: Rusedski through to fourth round in Miami

Greg Rusedski became the third Briton to beat Zimbabwean Byron Black this season as he scrambled through to the last 16 of the Ericsson Open in Miami today. Following early season defeats against Jamie Delgado and Tim Henman, Black was once again unable to beat a British opponent as he went down 6-1 7-6 (7-4) in one hour 22 minutes.

The British number two, ranked 45th in the Champions Race and seeded 17th in Miami is likely to meet Pete Sampras in the next round. The second seed meets Sweden's Andreas Vinciguerra later today.

Women's top seed Martina Hingis enjoyed an even easier win on the Stadium court. The Swiss world number one overwhelmed French 29th seed Anne-Gaelle Sidot 6-0 6-3 in only 53 minutes. Hingis was defeated by Serena Williams in the semi-finals of this event last year and her number one status will once again come under threat from Lindsay Davenport over the next seven days. Davenport faces Croatian Silvija Talija and Williams meets Japan's Ai Sugiyama in later action, while men's third seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov takes on Brazilian Fernando Meligeni.
