Soccer: Di Canio doesn't rule out Celtic return
Wednesday, 8 March 2000 10:47Paolo Di Canio has refused to rule out a return to Celtic Park in the future - if the club wanted him. The West Ham striker left Celtic Park for Sheffield Wednesday in 1997 after a fall-out with then chief executive Fergus McCann. However, the controversial Italian believes he, along with Peter Grant, could prove a tonic for Bhoys' supporters under the coaching of former boss Tommy Burns. "I am so happy that Tommy Burns is back at the club because I know how important it is for him to be at Celtic," Di Canio told Celtic View.
"I called him a few days ago to congratulate him and wish him good luck and I know that he is very happy to be back. Tommy knows it is my dream to win something with him, and I hope that dream comes true soon."
Meanwhile, former Celtic manager Billy McNeill has revealed he would love to become involved at Parkhead again. McNeill, who captained the Bhoys to their 1967 and enjoyed two stints in the Parkhead hot-seat in the 1980s, is still held in high regard by the Celtic fans. The former Scotland captain, who also had a management stint at Manchester City, would relish the chance to get involved again.
In other news, Rangers manager Dick Advocaat has urged the Scottish football hierarchies to increase the number of teams in the Premier League to 18. The Premier League will gain two new members next season, but the Dutchman believes that only another increase will help Scottish teams on the European stage. "Scottish football can't move on until everyone starts to think collectively for the benefit of the whole of our game," said Advocaat. "It's all right moaning about the standard of the game, but unless the smaller teams start helping themselves no one else can."
