Hickey to become EOC President

Pat Hickey, President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, is to become President of the European Olympic Committees organisation (EOC), one of the most powerful positions in the Olympic movement.

He will take up office in July and becomes the leading Irish figure in the administration of world sport.

The outgoing President, Mario Pescante of Italy, announced his intention to step down earlier this month because of increasing commitments in Italian politics, where he is a candidate for position of mayor of Rome.

Hickey, who is currently Secretary General of the EOC and Irish member of the International Olympic Committee, will formally take up office on 29 July.

He was unopposed for the position.
