Olympics: McDaid condemns Sydney squabbles
Wednesday, 11 October 2000The Minister for Sport, Jim McDaid, has said that he was appalled at the unseemly squabbling between the Olympic Council of Ireland and the Athletics Association of Ireland at the Sydney Olympics, and at the way in which the athletes were treated. However, in response President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Pat Hickey, claimed that the Minister was trying to cover up for the failures of his policies and those of the Irish Sports Council over the past four years. He stated that the blame for the poor Irish performances at Sydney lies squarely at the feet of the Minister and the Irish Sports Council.
