Tonight with Vincent Browne wins Medical Media Award
RTÉ Radio 1's Tonight with Vincent Browne team received an award last night for its persistent coverage of one of the major health stories of the year; The Lourdes Hospital Inquiry, and for their investigative, sympathetic and comprehensive approach to the testimony of the women victims of Dr Michael Neary in Drogheda.
Series producer Kevin Burns accepted the Radio Broadcast award on behalf of the team including presenter Vincent Browne, reporter Fergus Sweeney, researcher Mary Mulhern and broadcast co-ordinator Martina McGlynn at the sixth annual GlaxoSmithKline Irish Medical Media Awards.
RTÉ Radio 1's Tonight with Vincent Browne show devoted a total of eleven programmes to the issue early last year which featured re-enactments by Deirdre Monaghan, Joe Taylor and Malcolm Douglas of women's testimony at the Fitness to Practice Hearings investigating Dr Neary as well as Justice Maureen Harding Clarke's report.
There was comprehensive analysis of medical issues arising from the case as well as discussion of the how malpractice could be avoided in the future. A programme was devoted to victims telling their stories and the programme held a public meeting in Drogheda where local people, public representatives and central figures debated the issues arising from the Neary scandal.
