Cancer Treatment Hospitals

The following hospitals all provide breast cancer diagnosis (Triple Assessment) and treatment services but are all being reviewed by HIQA (Health Information Quality Authority) to determine the scale and type of services they provide and whether they can adhere to the National Quality Assurance Standards for Symptomatic Breast Disease (published in May 2007).

  • Mater Hospital Dublin (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • St James Hospital Dublin (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • AMNCH/ Tallaght Hospital
  • St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • Beaumont Hospital Dublin (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown
  • Waterford Regional Hospital (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • South Infirmary Hospital Cork
  • Cork University Hospital (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • Mid Western Regional Hospital Limerick (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • University College Hospital Galway (designated by the HSE as one of the 8 Centres of Excellence for cancer care)
  • Castlebar General Hospital
  • Sligo General Hospital
  • Letterkenny Hospital
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda
  • **Midland Regional Hospital Portlaois (services suspended at present while review of breast cancer services is being conducted by Dr Anne O'Doherty, Consultant Radiologist, St Vincent's University Hospital)

Though HIQA has no jurisdiction over private hospitals which are providing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, it has still invited these hospitals to take part in the review process.

On 26th September 2007 the HSE asked the following hospitals to cease providing any breast cancer diagnosis and treatment services

  • Naas General Hospital
  • Tullamore General Hospital
  • St Columcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown
  • Mallow General Hospital
  • Louth County Hospital
  • Cavan General Hospital
  • Our Lady's Hospital, Navan
  • Mid Western Regional Hospital, Nenagh
  • Ennis General Hospital
  • St Michael's Hospital, Dun Laoghaire
  • Roscommon County Hospital
  • Portiuncula Hospital
  • Mercy University Hospital, Cork (Cytology and Histopathology services in association with SIVUH exempted)

Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment services are also provided at Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, Portiuncla Hopsital, Ballinasloe and Kerry General Hospital but we are not aware of the status of these hospitals as yet.

The Irish Cancer Society's Cancer Information Service offers free confidential advice, support and information on cancer and related issues to anyone worried about any aspect of cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment or follow-on care.
