Today With Sean O Rourke Monday 12 October 2015
Murder of Garda Tony Golden, in Omeath
The deaths of a garda and a gunman who were shot dead in County Louth yesterday are being treated as a murder suicide.
Garda Tony Golden was 36 years of age and a father of three young children under the age of eight.
He's believed to have been responding to a 999 call over an alleged domestic abuse when he was shot by a gunman who then took his own life.
A woman shot at the scene is now in a stable condition in hospital.
Our reporter Valerie Cox was at the scene in Omeath and joining Sean was Michael O'Toole, former Justice Minister Dermot Ahern and Martin Donnellan, former Garda Assistant Commissioner.
The Taoiseach moved at the weekend to dampen the feverish election speculation that was rife last week. And with the budget tomorrow, the government is continuing to lay the groundwork for a favourable election outcome, most likely now, in the Spring.
Stephen Collins, Political Editor of the Irish Times joined Sean with the update.
Yesterday, crowds gathered together all over the country to watch one of the most promising and exciting days in the Irish sporting calendar.
The Irish rugby team took on France and the Irish football team was in action against Poland.
Evelyn O’Rourke went along to meet just some of the fans enjoying Super Sunday.
Perhaps the greatest performance by an Irish rugby team came against France as we won 24-9, following on from one of our biggest ever wins against the soccer World Champions last Thursday...but we couldn’t quite match that last night in Warsaw, as Martin O’Neill’s men came within inches of clinching automatic qualification, despite an unconvincing performance...so to the playoffs we go...
For all this and more, Damian Lawlor of the Sunday Independent Denis Hickie, former Ireland rugby international and Eamon Dunphy, soccer pundit and columnist with the Daily Star joined Sean in studio.
