Marie Louise O’Donnell has been at bingo night in the national stadium to see for herself why bingo is still so popular in this country.

    Suicide Prevention

Around 500 people die by suicide in Ireland each year, according to the latest statistics available.

That number has doubled since the 1980s.

Suicide campaigners compare the suicide crisis to the issue of road deaths, which have been greatly reduced in recent years.

Sean was joined by Noel Smyth, Property Developer and Chairman of the 3Ts suicide prevention charity.

    Van Gaal

He’s tough , he’s demanding, self confident and very successful but prone to the odd outburst.  Louis Van Gaal is the new Manchester United Manager. The Sun newspaper has a photo- shopped photograph of him with horns and a tail, red face and glowing green eyes – and says the Red Devils have been told to brace themselves for another “hair dryer”.

Joining Sean was sports journalist Guillem Balague.

Sligo man Sean Davey described a journey home he made last year for the first time in over 40 years to a cottage in Sligo he grew up in. Well, last week Sean returned to the cottage to collect items left behind, and our reporter Brian O’Connell was with him for that emotional return.

    International Clinical Trials Day

On this day in 1747, British Navy surgeon James Lind began a series of experiments into the cause of scurvy.

It consisted of 12 men, grouped into pairs and given everything from cider to oranges and lemons, and it eventually establishing a link between citrus fruits and scurvy.

This was the first ever clinical trial, and that is why today is designated International Clinical Trials Day.

I’m joined by Dr Cathy Kelly, consultant oncologist at the Mater Hospital and by Diane Hanley, a patient who has taken part in trials.
