    Erasmus Lecture

    Dubbed the “Aristotle of American Politics” by the Boston Globe, CNN’s senior political analyst for nearly 20 years and Professor of Public and International Affairs at the George Mason University, Bill Schneider is in Ireland to deliver the annual Erasmus lecture for the Higher Education Authority.


    Child Abuse and the Church

    The details of eight audits by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church covering the period from 1975 up to the present day have been published this morning. The audits cover six dioceses and two major orders - the Christian Brothers and the Kiltegan Fathers.

    On the line was Theresa Devlin Interim CEO of the National Board for Safeguarding Children.


    Central African Republic

    The Central African Republic has been in a state of instability for most of its 50 or so  years as an independent country, but the violence seen in its towns and villages in recent days has seen its people suffere a new level of chaos and killings.

    A former colony of France, the intervention of French troops in the conflict has helped restore some calm. Yesterday two French soldiers were killed during a clash in the capital Bangui.

    So what are the long term prospects for a country that is rich in gold and diamonds but is riddled with poverty and conflict?

    Joining Sean were Paul Melly, Associate professor at Chatham House but first I’m joined from Bangui by Sylvian Groulx, Head of Mission for Médecins Sans Frontières in the Central African Republic.



    One organisation that often promotes both fascination and mystique in equal measure are the Freemasons, but in recent years there has been an opening up of the organisation.

    Brian O’Connell has been meeting with freemasons at their Freemason's Hall on Molesworth Street and finding out more.
