    Great Irish Reportage

Great Irish Reportage/ Foreword by Olivia O’Leary Edited by John Horgan Published by PENGUIN

It could be argued that we Irish are fascinated by news and current affairs. We are a county awash with newspapers, radio stations, television stations and digital media sources of information.

Our book today is called Great Irish Reportage which recounts our tradition of reportage, journalism, dispatches and eyewitness accounts by leading writers.

From Elizabeth Bowen to Colm Tóibín, from Flann O'Brien to Maeve Binchy, some of Ireland's greatest writers have produced first-rate journalism.

Sean was joined by three leading exponents of this craft. John Horgan, the book’s editor, also journalist Olivia O’Leary and Catriona Crowe a Senior Archivist at the National Archives of Ireland

    Camille O'Sullivan

It's billed as politically-charged, sexually provocative and a violent thriller, we're talking about The Rape of Lucrece by Shakespeare. Singer Camille O’Sullivan , in collaboration with The Royal Shakespeare Company brings new life to this rarely seen tragedy through her musical adaptation of the story. This one woman production has been a sell-out hit internationally. And the good news is ,the show is coming to the O’Reilly Theatre in Dublin from 10 – 12 Oct. as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. The star of the show, Camille O’Sullivan joined Sean in in studio.

    Visitors from Vietnam

Last November, Valerie Cox visited a group of women in Hanoi in Vietnam who have transformed what was a slum neighbourhood into a green living area, growing their own vegetables and rearing chickens on the banks of the Red River. Last week a group of the women visited Ireland and Valerie Cox met up with them again and reported back to Sean.

    Silvio Berlusconi

Italy's longest-serving postwar prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi… the man who has dominated Italian politics for over twenty years, today faces an unprecedented rebellion in his own party that could prevent his attempts to collapse the country’s fragile coalition.

Irish Times Correspondent Paddy Agnew joined Sean on the line from Rome.

    Liam Adams

Yesterday Liam Adams was convicted of sexually abusing his daughter Aine on dates between 1977 and 1983. The abuse came to public attention in 2009 when Aine then in her 30s took part in an UTV Insight Programme produced by investigative reporter Chris Moore, and Chris Moore joined Sean from a studio in Belfast.

    Fr Kevin Doran

Prominent Dublin priest Fr Kevin Doran has dramatically resigned from the board of Dublin's Mater Hospital after the Catholic-run institution agreed to comply with the Government's controversial abortion law.

Sean was joined on the line by Michael Kelly, Editor, Irish Catholic.

As we heard on this programme last month the shortage of houses in some parts of Dublin is having a major effect on the availability and cost of RENTED accommodation. Whereas two years ago, rents seemed stable and tenants reported that landlords wanted to hold on to good tenants, now all of that has changed and tenants are facing massive competition for properties and are paying very high rents.

Paddy O’Gorman has been taking a look at all of this and joined Sean in studio.
