One million refugees have now fled their homes in Syria, escaping the crisis that has left four million people in need of humanitarian aid. Up to 7,000 people a night have been crossing the borders into Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and Turkey, many of them families with small children, walking up to one hundred kilometers to cross the borders at night.
Valerie Cox has been to the Turkish-Syrian border where 150,000 people are living in tented camps with another eight and a half thousand waiting to cross the border to safety.
The Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, has said the licensing system for horses has to be 'radically changed'.Mr Coveney said the system whereby seven individual bodies currently issue horse passports would have to end. He said this would be replaced by one body overseen by the Department of Agriculture.
His comments came after an inspection at Ossory Meats in Banagher, Co Offaly found that 25 horses presented for slaughter had irregularities relating to their passport and microchip identification.
