Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God

He was a charming man, a charismatic priest, he became director of the school for the deaf because of his organizational and fluency in sign language. But behind the social skills and bon homee lay a cunning and devious paedophile. He chose his victims with care, young deaf boys whose parents could not sign so the abuse could never be heard, confided or reported.

This is the story of a group of young boys from St John’s School for the Deaf in Milwaukee who were abused by Fr Lawrence Murphy and fought back in adulthood. It is the backbone of a new documentary by Oscar winning documentary maker Alex Gibney. The film Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God goes beyond the story of the deaf boys in St John’s and into the heart of cover-up within the world wide Catholic Church and the Vatican itself.

Mea Maxima Culpa will get its Irish premier tonight at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival and Pat was joined in studio by the director Alex Gibney. He also spoke to one of the contributors to the documentary, canon lawyer Fr. Thomas Doyle.
