Named after a British World War One heavy bomber aircraft, Vickers Vimy are a folk five-piece from Galway who play an amazing variety of instruments. The Vimy was also the plane Alcock and Brown flew from Newfoundland to Clifden in Galway in 1919 – so hence the connection. They were over in Studio 8 this morning to give us a sample of their new album ‘Volume 1 - The Vinyl Scratch’
At this moment just across the hall Studio 1 is resounding to the sounds of Spain and Mexico as the RTE Concert orchestra rehearse with a young guitarist for a concert on Wednesday night in the National Concert Hall. Joining the RTÉ CO and conductor John Wilson for the concerto is superb young Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanski, classed as ‘one to watch’ by Gramophone and the BBC Music Magazine and ‘a player destined for future glories’ by Classical Guitar Magazine. He slipped away during a break to come in and play us one or two pieces from his latest album ‘Sketches of Mexico’.
Beth Nielsen Chapman is the writer behind number-one country hits for Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, and Lorrie Morgan. Jazz artist Ute Lemper and blues-rock Grammy winner Bonnie Raitt have also recorded her songs. Chapman's own albums have charted in the top 10 in the Adult Contemporary field. Recently, Chapman's name has been in the news because Elton John chose the title song of her current release, Sand and Water, to sing at his concerts in memory of Princess Diana and Gianni Versace.

Music has been a part of Rachael Sage's life for as long as she can remember. The self-taught singer-songwriter, known for her melodic and often personal songs, made her foray into the musical world when she was just a toddler and she has been sharing her talents with eager audiences ever since.
She has just released her latest album ‘Haunted By You’ and she came in to sing for us this morning.
Eleanor McEvoy was born in Dublin , began piano lessons at age four; she took up the violin two years later, and as a teen joined the Junior Irish Youth Orchestra. Upon graduating college, McEvoy was tapped for the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, but after four years she quit to pursue a career as a pop performer; in 1992, her "Only a Woman's Heart" highlighted the anthology A Woman's Heart, which went on to become the best-selling album in Irish chart history. She has just released a cracking new album ‘If You Leave’ – it’s our Album of the Week’ here on Radio1 – so you will be hearing plenty of it over the next week but we thought on this Bank Holiday Monday we would get the woman herself to come in and sing a song or two for you live.
This Saturday night at the National Concert Hall our own Kieran Hanrahan will introduce a very special ‘Live’ Ceilí House concert to celebrate St Patricks Day.
It will feature the cream of Irish Trad music including Seamus Begley (button accordion & vocals) / Oisin Mac Diarmada (fiddle) / Tim Edey (guitar). Also Martin Hayes & Denis Cahill plus other guests.

On Friday 15 March, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will perform two major works by the award-winning Irish composer Shaun Davey at the National Concert Hall. Thirty years after its Irish premiere, a chance to hear The Brendan Voyage, a ground-breaking musical narrative for uilleann pipes and symphony orchestra based on Tim Severin’s Atlantic crossing in a medieval leather-skinned boat, retracing St Brendan’s sixth century journey from Ireland to the New World. Master uilleann piper Liam O’Flynn, for whom the piece was written will feature as soloist.
Considered one of the most exciting stories in opera, and one of the most popular Bizet’s Carmen opens at The Bord Gais Energy Theatre tomorrow night and runs until Sunday 17th.
This new production by The Moscow State Opera has a further treat for Dublin audiences in that the role of Michaela will be played by Ireland’s leading soprano, Celine Byrne.
An additional Irish dimension will be provided by the 20-piece Junior Musical Theatre School Choir from Bray who will provide one of the most charming scenes of the show.

Tomorrow week, Wednesday 13th March the Moscow State Opera’s production of Carmen will open at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin. It’ll run until Patrick’s Day and playing the lead role as Micaëla will be Celine Byrne who was here to give us a taste of what to expect.
