Times Roman, Times Modern

An exploration of changes that have taken place in print journalism in the last few decades, this new series will look at the evolving nature of newspapers and our relationship with them as readers. It will consider the recent history of newspapers - when each paper in this country would have had its own very distinct constituency and image, when papers were produced on hot metal and with old technology, and the inevitable changes that the demise of those circumstances had on the nature of the product.

Now new technology means changes in deadlines, which means changes in priorities, has also meant changes in journalists' lifestyles and modes of working - people working from home, out of the office environment - and whether that has been detrimental or beneficial to the end products.

Other topics covered will include: the demise of the Irish Press; the impact of new media on newspapers; competition between newspapers, especially at the tabloid end, and the effect that has on news values and gathering; and the whole issue of readership loyalty.
