Our next walk is in STRANDHILL:

The next outing of The John Murray Show Walking Club will be on Saturday 26th of November in Strandhill, Co. Sligo! It’s a coastal walk that will take us over the dunes and provide views on Ox Mountain and Ben Bulben. We’ll meet at 12.30pm at the main car park in Strandhill, Co. Sligo. As you enter Strandhill, you’ll see the car park on the left-hand side as you head towards the sea. Walk in Upperchurch, Co Tipperary

A final pitch inspection provided the all clear, and we descended on Upperchurch in the heart of North Tipperary for the much-anticipated second John Murray Walk. Hundreds of people travelled from Clare, Cork, Louth, Dublin, Cavan and Kildare to gather outside the Community Hall in the picturesque village of Upperchurch. Tea and scones were kindly provided by the community and walkers were registered. Suddenly, Jon Kenny & Pat Shortt – aka D’Unbelievables burst on the scene… . After they “cleared” up some “confusion” about walking the route – and ensured we all had walking sticks – we got underway.

The Loop Walk, was chosen by the Mid-Tipp Hill-Walkers – led by John G O‘ Dwyer. It took us through farmland and up those rolling hills. John interviewed D’Unbelievables and most of the walkers streaked ahead – showing their credentials.

At half way we stopped and John invited walkers to lead us in song -- Margaret Ryan led us in ‘Slieve Na mBán’ while Helen McCormick sang ‘The Banks of The Lee.’ Jon Kenny sang a rousing version of ‘Vale Of Avoca ‘ while young Margaret Gleeson gave us a haunting version of ‘The Old Man’ on her guitar - and then Pat Shortt robbed it and led everyone in ‘Jumbo Breakfast Roll!’

Along the way John had a chat with Maura Armstrong our oldest walker at 85. The rolling hills were absolutely no problem to her as she walks up to two hours every day.

The walk wound its way back down the rural country roads to Kinnane’s Pub – where a piping hot stew awaited us. We chatted to the Bean An Tí, Niamh Kinnane, and explored her fascinating history and connections with the area. The pub was packed with tired and happy walker -- and we sang Silent Night to bring proceedings to a close…

Walk at Clondra, Co Longford. Saturday, 30 October 2010

For all our photos, please click here.

The day was clear and the sky was blue when we gathered for the inaugural outing of The John Murray Show Walking Club at the Richmond Inn in Clondra Co. Longford on Saturday morning, October 30.

By 11am it became clear that our numbers had swollen beyond even our most optimistic estimate. After a welcoming cup of tea, John addressed the gathering of 300 by the canal and the walk got underway. Our special guest was showband legend and Longford native, Larry Cunningham.

The route – chosen by our hosts The Boherquill Ramblers – was a relatively gentle four miles along the canal, through the bog and finishing the other side of the RoyalCanal looping back into the village. Along the way, Brian Nerney from the Boherquill Ramblers and local historian Norman Good kept everyone on the right track. Walkers Anne serenaded with “You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me” and Anna sang “GalwayBay” – both winning a lovely Discover Ireland prize.

At the mid-point, the crowd assembled to hear Larry Cunningham sing his iconic song, ‘Lovely Leitrim.’

Upon returning to The Richmond Inn soup and sandwiches was kindly served up for all and a local group of musicians – led by Camillus Hiney – provided the entertainment. Larry sang ‘TipperaryTown’ while cake was provided in celebration of the Boherquill Ramblers tenth anniversary and we used whatever breath we had left in our lungs to blow out the candles.

A very special thanks to Larry Cunningham, and to Brian & Alice and all at Boherquill. Thanks also to Niamh, Frances, Des and The Richmond Inn for providing the hospitality and to Norman Good for the historical perspective.

And finally to all of you who travelled from near and far. From Louth, Roscommon, Meath, Westmeath, Wicklow, Monaghan, Sligo, Cork, Offaly, Laois, Leitrim and Dublin…Thank You.

Stay tuned for details of our next outing of the John Murray Show Walking Club…

As we know, walking is the cheapest form of exercise, which is very important in a recession... there are some who take it very seriously, some less so, but one this we do have here in ireland is plenty of places to go for a stroll, or a hike, or a climb...

So here at The John Murray Show HQ, it's all about walking. People who walk are less stressed, have more energy - it just makes them feel better.

Over the next few months, we hope to stride out with individuals and groups so if you are interested in taking part, just e-mail us at john@rte.ie and we'll keep you posted. And you can listen to our podcasts when you're out and about - perfect combination, if we say so ourselves.

For his first walk, John joined writer and broadcaster Olivia O'Leary for a stroll along the banks of river Barrow in Co. Carlow... You can see the photos below and listen back by clicking here.
